Capitalising on your intellectual property

Universities are treasure houses of original research and insights, which have great potential for commercial exploitation, whether through licensing, patents, spin-out ventures or other routes. Yet universities’ experience in realising this potential is varied. Better management of universities’ intellectual property (IP) could deliver substantial rewards for universities themselves and for the wider economy.

PA has specialist expertise in IP commercialisation, supported by our unique technology and innovation centre near Cambridge, which employs 200 scientists and engineers.

We work with universities to:

  • bridge the ‘development gap’ to take IP to market through brokering, product development and specialist business advice

  • explore joint investment options with venture capital companies and other funders (including Government sources)

  • broker and collaborate on bids to form part of Government-sponsored Technology and Innovation Centres

  • engage with UK Trade and Investment to identify and pursue opportunities for international collaborations and ventures

  • support university technology transfer offices with expertise and specialist resources, and providing related services to smaller institutions.

Our clients for these services include University College London, Imperial College London and King’s College London, and also Government departments and agencies including BIS, RCUK, Enterprise Ireland and the Irish Higher Education Authority.
