“Shared economy is here to stay. The question is whether we want to fight it or use it for our own advantage.”

Shared economy: access to commodities replaces ownership

In an analysis of the shared economy concept in which individuals exchange and loan their personal assets, published in Danish daily newspaper Politiken, PA’s Greening business expert Søren Have discusses the environmental benefits of sharing cars.

He encourages the Danish government to use a shared economy as a way to ensure green growth, without creating a shadow economy: “Shared economy is here to stay. The question is whether we want to fight it or use it for our own advantage. Considering how record companies managed in their fight against MP3 and iTunes and how foreign venture capital firms and companies embrace a shared economy, the potential is unquestionable.”

Soren suggests that Denmark’s trading heritage will enable shared economies to thrive, even though this is not yet the case: “To many people, a shared economy will become the preferred way to fulfil their needs – access to commodities will become more important than ownership of commodities […] Today the individual defines consumption, and ownership of things is regarded as a burden, for instance to own a car in the city.”

Søren adds that more efficient use of commodities is sensible in the light of the shortage of fossil fuels and raw materials.
