"It is clear that those taking on board roles assuming they are quiet backwaters may be in for a shock.."

STEPHEN BROOKS, pa consulting group QUOTED IN "Public - The Guardian's monthly magazine for senior public services professionals",  January 2009

How effective is your public sector board?

The role of public sector boards is very different to that of the private sector. Rather than being accountable to shareholders and for making profits, the mandate for public sector boards is much less clear. Policy is set by Ministers; directors represent diverse stakeholders with conflicting objectives; and organisational performance is a complex combination of measures.

Many Chairmen find an objective, external board review provides an invaluable way to assess whether they have the right governance, information and processes combined with the right skills, capabilities and teamwork. Backed by our extensive experience improving the effectiveness and delivery of organisations across the public sector, PA Consulting Group has developed a unique, impartial approach to quickly and accurately evaluate the key elements that make boards more or less successful:

  • Governance, structure and mission

  • Information

  • Capabilities

  • Ways of working

  • Risk management.

By carrying out a structured review of these areas, we can stimulate the development of a board into an efficient and effective body that provides assurance to stakeholders, leadership to the organisation and delivery to customers.
