The new government's emphasis on greener and more sustainable transport is likely to be welcomed by business, but travellers and campaigners may be disappointed. Real commitment of scarce funds will be necessary if the transport sector is to achieve tough emissions reduction targets, which are not themselves mentioned.
Clear policy and leadership from government is vital if business and consumers are to move towards lower carbon transport. Support for major investments in the rail system is timely, alongside more mundane improvements needed to build confidence in rail travel. More significantly perhaps is the pump-priming of a technological shift to electric vehicles - much more of this kind of far-sighted investment will be needed.
For a green revolution in transport - achieving anything like the target reductions of 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 - behaviours of operators and users will have to change across all modes. Government has to act now to inform, inspire and enable joined-up thinking and working focused on logistics and traveller needs, making low carbon travel the best choice economically and socially as well as environmentally - a truly sustainable future.
