Dublin Airport is the main base for two of the fastest growing and profitable airlines in Europe, Ryanair and Aer Lingus. The airport infrastructure has not been able to keep pace with the passenger growth or the increasing connecting traffic through to North America and Europe. The challenge for the airport and its key stakeholders was how to accelerate infrastructure development in a constrained airport environment.
Our approach
Our team initially worked for Aer Lingus in developing its growth strategy and developed capacity forecasts that showed Dublin Airport would be full by 2020.
We developed an outline airport masterplan that formed the basis for engagement between Aer Lingus and the DAA, which led to the development of a hub implementation programme that we are supporting by working for both the DAA and Aer Lingus across multiple projects – this involves aviation expertise and project management capability.
The airport development involves the demolition and relocation of 15 buildings, the building of a new pier, expansion of taxiways and aprons, refurbishment of existing infrastructure, expansion of the pre-clearance facility and new processes and procedures.
This development is vitally important for the airport, airlines and the Irish economy, and has involved extensive stakeholder management.
The results
The hub programme implementation is ongoing and will run through to 2022. To date, we have:
- Forecast airport capacity for 2022
- Designed airport and airfield efficiencies
- Gained regulatory approvals
- Established an integrated programme
- Launched multiple projects.
