Women in Tech of the month is our series exploring the achievements of women who are breaking gender stereotypes to build technology-based careers. This month, we’re celebrating Adebusiola (Ola) Ola-Adebomi, a software developer apprentice at PA. In our interview, Ola discusses her current role, shares her story about her journey into tech, and offers some tips.

Describe your role and what a typical day looks like for you.

As a software developer degree apprentice, I collaborate with experienced software developers and consultants to understand and create custom software solutions. I’m also a part-time student at university, working towards a degree in digital and technology solutions, specialising in the software engineering pathway. Applying new concepts learnt at university to my work allows me to consolidate my learning and enhance my technical and business knowledge.

In my role, I enjoy the continuous need to upskill and the opportunity to explore new technology stacks and problem-solving methods. My work often involves breaking down complex ideas into manageable tasks to arrive at a solution. At PA, I've been able to engage in projects beyond software development, expanding my network, and acquiring new skills.

A typical day begins with a team stand-up to discuss progress and address project challenges. Afterwards, I may handle university-related admin tasks before focusing on my assigned tasks for the day. This could involve upskilling, researching, pair programming, or debugging. Each day presents opportunities to grow and excel in my field.

What has your career journey been like so far?

My career journey began with an internship at a tech company after completing my A-levels. This experience was pivotal in guiding me towards a degree apprenticeship. I found joy in solving real-world problems and learning through practical application, which sparked my interest in this unique path. Although a degree apprenticeship wasn't initially on my radar, I valued the mentorship and opportunities I encountered during my internship, which ultimately influenced my decision. I still maintain connections with my mentors.

Through my degree apprenticeship, I've learnt the importance of asking questions and seeking clarity. It's essential to remember that questions are not just for finding answers but to dissolve uncertainty and discover new possibilities. Asking questions can open doors to new opportunities and insights, enabling you to navigate your career path confidently.

At PA, I’ve had the opportunity to work on various projects, from focusing on digital resilience to software development. This diverse range of experiences allows me to gain a deeper understanding of the industry and explore my interests across different sectors.

My primary goal is to participate in as many projects as possible to broaden my perspective and enhance my knowledge of how the industry operates. By immersing myself in different projects, I aim to discover where my passions lie and develop a well-rounded skill set.

What advice would you give to other women looking to pursue a career in technology?

To other women looking to pursue a career in technology, I would advise you to stay curious. Curiosity drives growth and prevents stagnation in your career, especially in the ever-evolving tech industry. Embrace the constant changes and challenges of learning new concepts and technologies.

Another important piece of advice is to seek mentorship. Having a mentor can provide invaluable guidance and support throughout your career. I've personally benefited from mentorship, which has helped me navigate my career path more effectively. Mentors offer insights from their journeys, sharing their experiences, and lessons learned. This can help you avoid common pitfalls and accelerate your progress.

Remember that your journey is unique, so stay open to learning from others while forging your path. With curiosity and mentorship, you can build a successful and fulfilling career in technology.

Does personal branding have value in career placement?

Yes, personal branding plays a crucial role in career placement. I am actively building my personal brand at PA and beyond.

Strong personal branding can shape your career journey in meaningful ways. By showcasing your skills, values, and unique strengths, you can attract opportunities that align with your goals and enable you to make a memorable impression that sets you apart. Building a reputation for excellence and reliability can help you stand out in a competitive industry and leave a lasting impact.

Can you share more on your personal experience of being an ally for women in the workplace?

My experience as an ally for women extends beyond the workplace to all aspects of life, especially when it comes to supporting the younger generation.

One of my greatest motivators is seeing women take on active roles in different phases of life, particularly in the STEM fields. I strive to be a role model for the next generation of women, inspiring them to pursue careers in these areas. By championing their progress, we can create more opportunities for women to thrive and succeed.
