In the future, a digital solution will make it possible to control traffic at several airports from one control centre.

Previously, air traffic controllers sat high above the ground in the control tower, but now a Danish airport is preparing to introduce so-called Remote Tower Service (RTS), which means that air traffic controllers will in future be able to use a digital solution to keep an eye on traffic in Billund and other regional airports.

However, as a time when we are seeing more cyber threats than ever before, this has raised concerns in some places

The article refers to PA Consulting's report "Overcome the Silent Threat" which highlights that there is a threat in replacing humans with digital instructions as it means the pilot potentially cannot recognise if instructions such as false clearance messages are suspicious, creating more opportunity for cyber-terrorism.

In the article, Morten Søndergård from Naviair says: "Cyber threats are a huge issue. It is necessary that, just like here at the airport, we have an operational network that is completely enclosed and secure. As well as safety procedures in place that are followed."

The article emphasises that it is not only in Denmark where the new technology is being introduced. It has also been deployed in Sweden, Norway and Germany, among others. So this is a way to support Denmark to keep up with developments.
