PA Consulting client work: Supporting the establishment of ground-breaking Mental Health Research for Innovation centre

PA Consulting, the company that’s bringing ingenuity to life, is delighted that its work supporting the Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Liverpool has helped the team to create the world’s first ever Mental Health Research for Innovation Centre (M-RIC).
The M-RIC will establish a world-class environment within which research and innovation, co-designed with patients and service users, flourishes in multi-sector collaboration. This includes health professionals, researchers, industry partners, and public advisers. The Centre will create a world first ‘learning system’ where treatments improve the more they are used, studied and refined. Most importantly, the local population will have greater access to more coordinated interventions, and an opportunity to contribute to new initiatives that will enable patients to better support their mental health.
PA supported Mersey Care to define the feasibility of the mission and design the operating model, processes and platform, incorporating the wider societal and economic benefits that will be delivered by taking an innovative approach to research and collaboration.
The M-RIC will be funded by the award of £10.5 million from the Office for Life Sciences and the National Institute for Health and Social Care Research. It will focus on under-researched areas such as early intervention in psychosis, depression, and children and young people’s mental health, and underpins Liverpool City Region’s commitment to service users, providing easy access to clinical trials and increasing their involvement in better care, closer to home.
Liverpool City Region has one of the UK’s highest burdens of socio-economic disadvantage and poor mental health, with mental health service users traditionally facing a life expectancy 20 years less than the UK average and 45 percent coming from the most deprived fifth of areas.
PA supports NHS systems and organisations to deliver lasting change. PA works to reduce pressures on frontline teams, to design and deliver more efficient services, and to digitise for a sustainable health system for future populations.
