RE:FIT
Saving energy and cutting carbon emissions in the UK capital
Tags
We’ve been working with RE:FIT London, the programme set up by the Mayor of London, to help reduce carbon emissions in the UK capital. Working in close collaboration with RE:FIT, we’ve given organisations the support needed to develop their business case for investment in energy efficiency and design the financing package to make this possible.
Key successes
- Provided more than 220 organisations with business case support for investment in energy efficiency
- Helped secure over £91 million worth of investments in retrofit projects
- Stopped more than 35,000 tonnes of CO2 entering the UK capital’s air every year
Shaping an energy efficiency future
RE:FIT London is an award-winning programme that aims to make public buildings like hospitals, government offices and schools more energy efficient. Since 2009, PA’s commitment to sustainability and expertise in business case strategy and financial analysis has been helping make that ambition a reality.
Through the programme, public sector organisations can get free advice and support on retrofitting their buildings to reduce energy use. This can cover anything from upgrading insulation and fitting energy-saving lights bulbs, to installing new technologies like solar PV panels.
Technical advice for the programme is provided by infrastructure specialists Turner & Townsend at no cost to the public sector as this service is fully funded by the Greater London Authority and the European Regional Development Fund.
Making the case for change
Our role is to help organisations develop the business case for their investment in energy efficiency and design the financing package to make this possible. This can include help with accessing funding provided by the Mayor and the European Union.
Since we first got involved, more than 220 organisations have benefitted from this type of support and more than £91 million has been invested in retrofit projects through RE:FIT.
Our wide network of contacts across the public sector has made a big impact. We've helped extend the programme’s reach by introducing clients and contacts to the opportunities. We recently supported Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust as they implement the first phase of their Energy Performance Contract through RE:FIT. The Trust have already identified guaranteed energy savings of £1.6 million per year. And clients are saving money. In fact, RE:FIT guarantees energy savings, which typically come in at 15–25 per cent. The programme has helped public sector organisations in London reduce energy costs by more than £8.6 million a year. There’s another important benefit. RE:FIT projects now prevents more than 35,000 tonnes of CO2 entering the atmosphere every year, contributing to the Mayor’s commitment for London to be a zero carbon city by 2050 in the fight against climate change.
